Conflict over Danzig and Poland
• Hitler wanted Danzig to be returned to Germany & demanded to build a railroad across the Polish corridor to reconnect Germany with East Prussia
• Poland distrusted Hitler, unwilling to give in to his demands
• Britain and France tried to negotiate with Germany
• When negotiations broke down, German troop invaded Poland on 1 September 1939
• Hitler was confident that Britain and France would not take action
• 3 September 1939 : After a final ultimatum to Hitler, Britain and France declared war on Germany. World War II has broken out in Europe.
