Duty to God

• What are the key parts? 

  Responsibility to the state does not mean blind obedience 

  Ensure the state acts according to God’s will 

  State- never ultimate power 

  Church- keep state in check, not part of it 
• What did Bonhoeffer say? 

  “You can only know what obedience is by obeying, it is no use asking questions; for it only obedience that you come to learn the truth” 
• “There is no road to faith or discipleship, no other road – only obedience to the call of Jesus” 
• Bonhoeffer civil disobedience: 

  University, prayers, criticizing confession church when it was wavered, Hitler as anti-Christ and double agents. 
• What is civil disobedience?

  Resistance/ retaliation, action against will of the state.
