setting conservation priorities

Cards (4)

  • Conservation of biological diversity involves protecting ecosystems, species, and genes from extinction and maintaining their ecological functions.
  • wildlife conservation involves interfering in the habitats and populations of wild species in ways that are intended to be beneficial for conservation .  this involves making choice and decisions using general knowledge and facts .
Some species / habitats are perceived to be more important than others and so they may be prioritised.
  • The International union for the conservation of nature (IUCN)
    Role of the IUCN :
    • Coordinating global data on biodiversity conservation
    • Increasing understanding of the importance of biodiversity
    • Deploying nature-based solutions to global challenges in climate , food and sustainable development .
  • the criteria used to select species for caegorisation :
    • species in habitats under particular threat
    • Evolutionary unique species
    • Endemic species
    • Keystone species ( species that has an important role in maintaining the ecological structure of a community )
    • Flagship species ( species that have a high public profile )
    • Degree of population dispersal ( species is fragmented into a number of isolated locations )
