  • Not everyone lives with a family. Some may:
    • Live on their own or with friends (shared housing)
    • Move away for university and remain in that location when they have finished
    • Live in sheltered or residential accommodation
  • 1 in 3 households contain only one person compared to 1 in 20 in 1901. Under half of these are over pensionable age compared to two-thirds in 1971. The number of young people living alone is growing.
