  • Carbohydrates:
    • essential nutrients which are broken down into sugar called glucose
    • glucose is the fuel that your cells use for respiration, to release energy for life processes
  • Proteins:
    • broken down into animo acids during digestion
    • important for making new cells for growth and repair damaged tissue in the body
    • it is also needed to make haemoglobin and antibodies
  • Fats:
    • broken down into nutrients glycerol and fatty acids
    • They help to insulate our bodies to stay warm, are a source of energy and they make up our cell membrane
  • Energy stores:
    • you can get almost all your energy from the carbohydrates and fats that you eat
    • you can get energy from proteins if you run out of those
    • you store a little but of carbohydrate (short-term stories) in your body cells
    • you store quite a lot of fat (long-term store), in special cells underneath the skin and around some body organ
