Material Deprivation

Cards (3)

  • Material deprivation is when the family might not have enough money to provide resources for school
  • Even though state education is free there are hidden costs which add up to around £1,614 a year per child. These costs are from things like; school uniform, PE kit, school trips, stationary and school photographs.
  • Material deprivation can mean that some students have to work part time which may mean that they are too tired to study at home or at school. It can also make it hard for them to study at home as it might be overcrowded or the living conditions might not be good and could affect their health.
