Powers of Congress

Subdecks (2)

Cards (13)

  • Congress confirms the VP nominated by the president with a majority vote
  • Both houses must approve a bill before it becomes law. Once approved the bill is sent to the president where it will be signed, vetoed, sent back for review, or 'left on the president's desk'
  • Congress decides whether to amend or abandon a bill, or override the president's veto. The veto can be overridden by a two-thirds majority in each house
  • Both houses must vote for a declaration of war, though it has not been used since WW2. Modern presidents avoid asking Congress for a formal declaration of war - the president's power to wage war is limited without the Power of the Purse
