Composition of Congress

• Only 28.65% of Congress is female, even though American women have voted at a higher rate than men for over 40 years
• The absence of term limits in Congress and the two party system advantages incumbents who have historically have been disproportionately men
• 13% of the population is black and the 13.79% of black Representatives reflect the population
• 18.7% of the population is Latino, but only 12.87% of the House
• In 2019 there were no Native Americans or Pacific Islanders in Congress
• 87.8% of Congress is Christian but only 63% of the population is
• 29% of the population have no religious beliefs, but only 0.2% of Congress are non-religious
