  • The exploitation of the world’s resources is one of the key causes of climate change. Processes such as fracking, mining and land clearing are direct causes of emissions have direct and indirect effects on global warming. A view that the earth is a resource to be exploited for wealth and economic reasons now and not preserved for future generations.
  • According to UNEP, in the last 50 years, resource exploitation grew from 27 to 92 billion tonnes. Natural resource extraction and processing contributes to 50% of natural greenhouse gas emissions.
    • Petrol and gas driven cars are a major source of extraction through mined metals, rubber, energy in their manufacture and fossil fuels once on the road. 
    • Electric vehicles consumer lithium, a precious metal to be mined, processed and exported. 
    • Building of infrastructure leads to rising demand for quality building materials such as sand, cement and clay. Chatham House reports 4 billion tons of cement produced each year contributing to 8% of global emissions.
