  • Endocrine system- is made up of glands, which secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream, which are carried to specific organs.
  • Pituitary gland
    • Known as 'master gland'
    • Tells body what to do and stimulates other glands to release their hormones
    • It is attached to the brain
  • Thyroid gland
    • Found in the neck
    • Produces thyroxine, which regulates rate of metabolism and is important in growth and development
    • 'TSH' will be released from pituitary gland, when thyroxine level is low (negative feedback)
  • Adrenal gland
    • Found on top of the kidneys
    • Produces adrenaline, which can increase heart rate
    • It is released in response to fear or stress, and it readies the body for a fight or flight response
  • Pancreas
    • Found in front of the kidneys
    • Produces insulin and glucagon, which regulate the blood glucose concentration
  • Testes
    • Produces testosterone, which controls puberty
    • Produces sperm
  • Ovaries
    • Produces oestrogen, which is involved in puberty and menstrual cycle
    • Hold egg cells
  • Difference between;
    ENDOCRINE
    • Spreads more slowly but the effects last longer.
    • Acts generally, as it spreads through the entire body.
    NERVOUS
    • Very fast but effects don't last long.
    • Sent to specific area.
