Properties of Gases

Cards (11)

  • What is the kinetic theory of gases?
Gas molecules are in constant, random motion and their kinetic energy is stored in collisions between gas particles.
  • What is the pressure of gases?
The force exerted per unit area by gas particles colliding with the container walls.
  • What is the temperature of gases?
Average heat energy of particles in a system. An increase in temp. indicates gas particles move more quickly.
  • What is the volume of gases.
    Gases occupy their whole container.
  • What is a variable volume system?
Have walls that can adjust to the volume of the gas such as a balloon or a syringe.
  • What is a fixed volume system?
Closed system, the walls don't expand.
  • What is Gay-Lussac's Law?
    P1/T1=P2/T2
  • What is Charles Law?
    V1/T1=V2/T2
  • What is Boyle's Law?
    P1V1=P2V2
  • What is SLC?
    298 K, 100kPa
  • What is STP?
    273K, 100kPa
