Stem Cells

Cards (9)

  • Stem Cells/Specialised cells

a type of cell that has teh ability to produce different types of body cells through mitosis.
  • Differentiation
The process by which stem cells become specialized cells
  • Proliferation
the process by which stem cells divide into more stem cells
  • 3 Different Types of Stem Cells
    • Totipotent
    • Pluripotent
    • Multipotent
  • Embryonic Stem Cells

stem cells removed from the embryo
  • Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSCs)

Cells are taken from adult tissues and induced in a lab to be pluripotent.
  • Totipotent Stem Cells
Can give rise to any cell necessary for embryonic development
  • Pluripotent Stem Cells

can give rise to most but not all tissues of an organism
  • Multipotent Stem Cells

Give rise to cells that have a specific function e.g. bone stem cells form RBCs
