Seismic Waves

Cards (2)

  • Seismic waves occur from earthquakes and have multiple forms:
    Primary - longitudinal pressure waves
    Secondary - transverse shear waves
Both are able to travel through solids, yet only longitudinal can travel through liquids
  • Can be used to identify that the Earth's core is liquid as there are large areas where S-waves cannot be found opposite to the earthquake's epicentre
