DEFINITIONS

• POPULATION: all of the individuals of one psecies in a given area occupying the same habitat at the same time with the potential to interbreed
• POPULATION: all individuals of the same species in the same area at the same time
• CARRYING CAPACITY: the maximum stable population size that an environment can support
• ECOSYSTEM: a self contained unit consisting of a community (or multiple) of species interacting with each other and with the non-living components of their environment
• POPULATION SIZE: a balance between factors that increase numbers and factors that decrease numbers
• TURBIDITY: the measure of the cloudiness of a suspension (ie. how much light can pass through it)
• IMMIGRATION: where individuals join a population from outside
• EMMIGRATION: where individuals leave a population
• ECOLOGY: the study of the inter-relationships between organisms and their environment. The environment includes both biotic and abiotic factors
• HABITAT: place where an organism lives and its role there
• COMMUNITY: all the organisms in the same area at the same time
