Lesson 1.4: Gifts of the Holy Spirit

• Wisdom - we see God at work in our lives and in the world
• Understanding - we comprehend why we need to live as a follower of Jesus Christ and also taught us how
• Counsel (right judgement) - we know the difference between right and wrong, and we choose to do what is right
• Fortitude (courage) - we overcome our fear and are willing to take risks as a follower of Jesus
• Knowledge - we understand the meaning of God's Revelation, especially as expressed in the life and words of Jesus Christ
• Reverence (piety) - a deep sense of respect for God and the Church
• Fear of the Lord - we are aware of the glory and majesty of God through His creation

• Charity (love) - the self-giving; that gives freely without asking anything in return
• Chara - Greek word for joy
• Charis - Greek word for grace
• Joy - a spirit-given expressing that flourishes best in hard times
• Peace - the result of resting in a relationship with God; tranquility, a state of rest; comes from seeking after God, or, the opposite of chaos

• Patience - longsuffering, endurance; means to persevere calmly when faced with difficulties
• Kindness - to act with sympathy and compassion
• Goodness - state or quality of good; moral excellence and virtue; general character recognized in quality or conduct
• Generosity - the total self-giving without expecting anything in return
• Gentleness - known as meekness; a disposition that is even-tempered, tranquil, balanced in spirit
• Faithfulness - adhering firmly and devotedly, as to a person, good cause, idea and most especially to the Creator
• Modesty - to be contented with what is just needed; does not harbor any ambitions, nor take pride in any achievements
• Self-Control - to control one's emotions and desires; control out thoughts and disciple of our senses
• Chastity - purity of mind, heart, and body
• Fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chastity
