  • CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS
    often known as an Italian explorer, colonizer, as well as the man who “discovered” America
  • DARK AGES
    originated in the 1330s ; a term for the Early Middle Ages or occasionally the entire Middle Ages, in Western Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire that characterizes it as marked by economic, intellectual, and cultural decline
  • RENAISSANCE
    French word meaning rebirth, now used in English to describe the great revival of art that took place in Italy from about 1400 under the influence of the rediscovery of classical art and culture
  • KING HENRY VIII
    King of England from 22 April 1509 and King of Ireland from 18 June 1542 until his death in 1547; best known for his six marriages, and his efforts to have his first marriage annulled
  • AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
    began in 1861, after decades of simmering tensions between northern and southern states over slavery, states’ rights and westward expansion
  • QUEEN VICTORIA
    Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death in 1901; Her reign of 63 years and 216 days is known as the Victorian era and was longer than any of her predecessors.

    Black slaves played a major, though unwilling and generally unrewarded, role in laying the economic foundations of the United States — especially in the South; Blacks also played a leading role in the development of Southern speech, folklore, music, dancing, and food, blending the cultural traits of their African homelands with those of Europe

    a period of global transition of human economy towards more efficient and stable manufacturing processes that succeeded the Agricultural Revolution, starting from Great Britain, continental Europe, and the United States, that occurred during the period from around 1760 to about 1820–1840

    the First World War (WWI) was fought from 1914 to 1918 and the Second World War (or WWII) was fought from 1939 to 1945; the largest military conflicts in human history; both wars involved military alliances between different groups of countries
  • ENGLISH AMERICAN
    Americans whose ancestry originates wholly or partly in England; In the 2020 United States census, English Americans were the largest group in the United States with 46.5 million Americans self-identifying as having some English origins representing of the White American population

    The Romans found the land inhabited by the Britons or Celts. The Britons/Celts were conquered by the Anglo-Saxons. Christian missionaries converted pagans.

    the first king, brought order and prosperity to the land.
  • Middle Ages/Medieval Times (5th-15th century)
    The Normans conquered the land under William, Duke of Normandy in 1066. St. Augustine, the first bishop of Canterbury, converted the Saxons. Christianity remained a powerful influence. The feudal system was established.

    Chivalric code became the basis of morals and manners for the nobility class. It rekindled the people’s curiosity on philosophy, religion, and science. The Hundred Years’ War between England and France started. The period was interrupted by the bubonic plague that killed half of England's population. This tragic period was called the Dark Ages.

    It was the rebirth of culture. Renewed interest in the humanities and sciences Caxton introduced the printing press into England. King Henry VIII established the Church of England. England triumphed against Spain.

    The Virginia company was chartered by King James I of England to establish a colony in America. The Plymouth Colony was established by the Pilgrims. The Puritans had the same intention as the Pilgrims but with no desire to separate from England.

    King James and the Parliament Clashed. The Civil War broke out between 1642–1649. The Puritan rule ended in 1660. It was period of great economic and scientific achievements. Industrial Revolution happened as a result of capitalism.

    African slaves were transported to the Americas to work on plantations. The French and the English fought over some areas of North America. The Americans started to protest against English rule.

    This era saw Queen Victoria’s longest reign as a monarch. The Victorian Age was the period of stability and prosperity. The British society became more conscious of their class, morals, and proper decorum.

    The American Revolution broke out in 1775. The Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. The US Constitution was adopted in 1789 and George Washington became the first president of the Republic. The modernization of manufacturing process brought advancement especially to the northern states. The American Civil War broke out in 1861.

    This period saw World War I and World War II. England was part of the Allied forces together with the USA. The country gained its political and financial stability after the war. The UK was a founding member of NATO, and in 1973 it became a member of the European Union. Queen Elizabeth II had been reigning since 1952.

    The US participated in World War I. More and more rights were granted to marginalized peoples. The Roaring 20s; The Great Depression; US was part of the Allied Forces during World War II. Rise of Modernism

     US economy prospered, but the gap between the rich and the poor widened. The marginalized peoples demanded fuller rights. US was criticized for its participation in the Vietnam War (1957–1975). US continued supporting other countries like Kuwait and Afghanistan to defeat their enemies.
