Bus Boycotts

• Government paid bus companies to keep fares low (to stop wage complaints), but some companies raised prices, causing hardship and unrest
• Africans were driven from city centers to townships due to Group Areas and Native Resettlement Acts, but their jobs were still in the city and since they couldn't afford cars they were reliant on buses
• 1957 Alexandra Boycott: People boycotted buses, facing a 32km walk from Alexandra to Johannesburg and back , police harassment/intimidation were present the whole way, but high domestic support led to fare increase removal
