Inkatha (IFP)

Cards (3)

  • The problems we have looked at so far were going on against a background of violence; there was huge amounts of violence between various groups – no longer just motivated by skin colour
  • The ANC were leading negotiations with the NP to end apartheid fully and create a new democracy, but they encountered a problem - the Inkatha (IFP) – led by Buthelezi
  • The IFP became a ‘rival’ to the ANC in 1990s, with similarities to the PAC in political aims; the Boipatong Massacre – June 1992 – Inkatha members killed 45 residents, focusing on ANC members and IFP accused of links to the government / police
