Tests for the biological molecules

Cards (6)

  • what is the test for starch?
Add iodine, a positive result is that the solution turns into a blue black colour from an orange yellow
  • What is the test for reducing sugars?
Add benedict's reagent and heat it. A positive test is that the solution should change from Blue, to green, yellow, orange or brick red depending on how concentrated the reducing sugar is.
  • What is the test for non-reducing sugars?
Following a negative benedict's test, add acid and boil the solution to do an acid hydrolysis. Then let the solution cool, then add benedict's reagent and heat. The positive result is the same as a reducing sugar test.
  • What is the test for proteins?
Add biuret's reagent. Should turn Blue to a purple colour as a positive result.
  • how to test for lipids?
Dissolve the sample in ethanol, add distilled water and if a white emulsion forms then you have a positive result.
  • How to use a colourimeter?
    Set a filter
Calibrate using a cuvette full of distilled water
Insert samples from the test, in different cuvettes
Measure the % transmission of light
