• Conflict, according to the United Nations, remains the primary driver of terrorism, with more than 99% of all terrorist related deaths occurring in countries involved in a violent conflict with high levels of political terror. 

  • Further, the global terrorism index revealed in their 2024 report how over 90% of terrorist attacks and 98% of terrorism deaths in 2023 occurred in conflict zones, underscoring the strong link between conflict and terrorism
• As US allies ploughed money and arms into the Syrian civil war, much of it ended up in the hands of ISIS.  Furthermore, After the US withdrawal from Iraq, the Iraqi army was over-equipped and underprepared to deal with ISI. Much of the weaponry ended up in ISIS’s hands. 
• The conflict between the Nigerian government and armed groups such as Boko Haram, has displaced over two million Nigerians in their homeland. Hundreds of thousands have sought protection in neighbouring countries.

  • The civilian population is being subjected to gross abuse in the form of mass kidnappings of children, murders and sexual assaults.
