  • The acceleration and vast development of technologies can been seen as a positive presence, but also a carrier for risks that are unpredictable. An open global system allows for negative entities to be brought before countries. 
  • Globalisation has caused massive changes that have resulted in the weakening of countries, such as political unrest and economic deprivation. The dissatisfaction among the population is a tool for terrorist. 
    • This is facilitated through the use of new technology in these countries, whereby the internet can present information in a way that favour terrorists and use the anger of the people to mobilise support.
  • Extremists groups today have unprecedented access to the general public through the internet, which allows for more efficient and effective recruitment, incitement and propaganda. This also allows for the purchase of weapons and unregulated money transfers.
  • CASE STUDY: Australia’s Encryption Laws
    • Australia has passed ‘controversial’, according to the BBC, laws designed to compel technology companies to grant policy and security agencies access to encrypted messages. 
    • The government says the laws, a world first, are necessary to help combat terrorism and crime. 
    • Australia and other countries have said that terrorists and criminals exploit end-to-end encryption technology to avoid surveillance.
    • Under Australia's legislation, police can force companies to create a technical function that would give them access to encrypted messages without the user's knowledge.
