  • Assumptions of Social Influence
    1. Behaviour is determined through our social interaction. We're social beings and easily influence each other.
    2. Behaviour is influenced by our social cognition. How we think and feel about our social experiences
  • Social influence- How individuals affect and are affected by others
  • Conformity- A form of social influence that results in people yielding to adopt behaviour, attitudes and values of other members of a larger group
  • Kelman (1953) argued there were three types of conformity:
    • Compliance
    • Internalisation
    • Identification
  • Compliance:
    • Individuals adjust their behaviour or opinions to those of a group to be accepted
    • Desire to fit in publicly (not privately)
    • Occurs when behaviour is under surveillance
  • Identification
    • Publicly and privately adjust behaviours and opinions because membership of a group is desirable
    • Mostly temporary
  • Internalisation
    • Known as true conformity
    • Individuals genuinely adjust their behaviour and actions to those of a group
    • Publicly and privately adjust, not just in the presence of others
