Assumptions of Social Influence
Behaviour is determined through our social
interaction.
We're
social
beings and easily influence each other.
Behaviour is
influenced
by our
social cognition.
How we think and feel about our social experiences
Social influence-
How individuals affect and are affected by others
Conformity- A form of social influence that results in people yielding to adopt
behaviour
, attitudes and
values
of other members of a larger group
Kelman
(
1953
) argued there were three types of conformity:
Compliance
Internalisation
Identification
Compliance:
Individuals
adjust
their behaviour or opinions to those of a group to be
accepted
Desire
to fit in
publicly
(not privately)
Occurs when behaviour is
under surveillance
Identification
Publicly and privately adjust behaviours and opinions because membership of a group is
desirable
Mostly
temporary
Internalisation
Known as true
conformity
Individuals genuinely
adjust
their behaviour and actions to those of a group
Publicly
and
privately
adjust, not just in the presence of others
