Q14. Define ossification and calcification: how are they similar and how are they different?
Ossification
is defined as the formation of bone, otherwise known as
osteogenesis
Calcification
is defined as the deposition of calcium salts within a tissue
Similarity. Both processes involve the deposition of
calcium phosphate
crystals (
hydroxyapatite
) into an organic matrix.
Difference. Ossification occurs only in
bones
while calcification can occur in
other tissues such as cartilage or blood vessels.
