Study Question Fourteen

Cards (5)

  • Q14. Define ossification and calcification: how are they similar and how are they different?
  • Ossification is defined as the formation of bone, otherwise known as osteogenesis
  • Calcification is defined as the deposition of calcium salts within a tissue
  • Similarity. Both processes involve the deposition of calcium phosphate crystals (hydroxyapatite) into an organic matrix.
  • Difference. Ossification occurs only in bones while calcification can occur in other tissues such as cartilage or blood vessels.
