  • It also explores the internal conflict from the inherent contention between an individual’s desires and social unrest. In my narrative, I convey how intense personal desires can lead to fear, regret, and disillusionment, highlighting the intersection of personal conviction and social responsibility.
  • Inspired by Tara June Winch’s After the Carnage, I reflect on personal turmoil and the need for reconciliation.  Particularly, in “Wager” Winch uses the hook of a “wager” , the story’s vivid, violent opening draws readers into a character shaped by inner conflict—a struggle between personal desires and societal unrest—explored through these perspectives seeking reconciliation., immediately drawing readers into the protagonist’s struggle and building an atmosphere of tension.
  •   Similarly, I crafted a strong hook in my story with potent imagery : “They looked like cancer; irregular and disorganised. In their demented movement, they pushed towards the nuclei.” By employing scientific terms like “cancer” and “nuclei,” I sought to evoke both the chaotic tension of the scene and the protagonist’s analytical, university-student persona. This juxtaposition of visceral disorder with her composed intellect mirrors Winch’s technique of contrasting stark elements—such as “blood” and “bathroom”—to deepen character complexity.
  •  The clash between her logical thinking and the chaotic surroundings intensifies her inner turmoil, immersing readers in her experience. Inspired by Winch, I aimed to emphasise this contrast to enrich the protagonist’s depth, capturing the conflict between her intelligence and the upheaval threatening her structured world.
  • In “Meat House”, Tara June Winch uses shifts in characterization to reveal the protagonist’s journey from calmness to anxiety, emphasizing personal turmoil in a broader social context. Inspired by this, I use intense imagery to depict my protagonist’s transformation. Lines like “Fists tighten into knots, rubbing at eyes which cease to burn” signify outward defiance, contrasting with “I trembled in stillness while my cheeks burned with terror and hopefulness,” which reveals an internal struggle.
  • This contrast illustrates her conflict between the desire to resist and the harsh reality she faces, highlighting the irony of yearning for something without grasping its difficulties. Like Winch, I wanted to show how people may pursue appealing goals, sometimes overlooking the real challenges they involve.
  • In “Baby Island” , Winch further explores irony, contrasting characters' inner thoughts with external actions to reveal relational complexities and self-discovery. Inspired by this, I incorporated irony between my protagonist’s reflections and actions to convey a similar sense of yearning and awakening. During a conversation with her father, a “yellow umbrella” symbolizes protection and a potential connection, and his words, “be careful,” express concern.
  •  This moment brings out the tension within Asian family dynamics, where relationships often prioritize academic success over emotional closeness. Despite recognizing his intention, the protagonist ironically feels discomfort, revealing the subtle distance in their relationship. Through this moment, I aimed to underscore her conflict between familial expectations and her pursuit of individual desires.
  • In her deepening inner conflict, the protagonist reflects, “breaths were suddenly ragged, and I trembled in stillness while my cheeks burned with terror and hopefulness,” contrasting her earlier defiance with quiet anxiety.
  • This internal monologue captures her realization of the dangers she faces, even as her commitment pushes her to act. This irony illustrates the pull between her goals and the violent consequences, echoing the common tendency to overlook hardships when captivated by ambition.
  • Inspired by the flashbacks in “Failure to Thrive”, which Winch uses to underscore trauma. The flashback as she walks home from the protest—'our arms are tired and our hair slick with sweat' captures the camaraderie and joy of shared activism, contrasting sharply with her return home, where 'my lie came out slick and naked.'
  •  This irony highlights her disconnect: the unity of the protest versus the isolation of hiding her truths. By intertwining past and present, I illuminate her journey through grief and self-discovery, revealing the tension between personal desires and societal expectations.
  • This approach mirrors Winch’s examination of human resilience amid external pressures, connecting readers to her confrontation with societal realities and her evolving values.
  • Inspired by Tara June Winch’s “After the Carnage” , my story explores the clash between personal desires and social chaos. I effectively used shifting timelines to mirror my protagonist’s fragmented mindset, allowing readers to experience her journey of self-discovery as her ambitions confront harsh realities.
  •  Through vivid imagery and ironic contrasts, this structure intensifies the tension between her ideals and the complex consequences of her actions, capturing the cost of growth in a world where individual dreams meet collective challenges. This narrative approach effectively emphasises how personal conflict can be shaped and magnified by an unpredictable, chaotic environment.
