FMRI - functional magnetic resonance imagining
This measures changes in
brain activity
while a person performs a task.
It measures changes in
blood flow
in particular areas to the brain which indicates an
increase
neural activity in those areas.
Strengths of fMRI
Non invasive
- does not expose individual to
harmful
radiation
Has a good
temporal
resolution (shorter delay between activity and imaging)
Good
spatial
resolution depicting detail by
mm
rather than
cm
Weakness of fMRI
Not a direct measure of
neuronal
activity in areas of the brain,
difficult
to tell what kind of activity is occurring in these brain areas
Overlooks
networked
nature of brain activity and focuses on
localisation
instead of communication
