  • FMRI - functional magnetic resonance imagining
This measures changes in brain activity while a person performs a task.
It measures changes in blood flow in particular areas to the brain which indicates an increase neural activity in those areas.
  • Strengths of fMRI
    • Non invasive - does not expose individual to harmful radiation
    • Has a good temporal resolution (shorter delay between activity and imaging)
    • Good spatial resolution depicting detail by mm rather than cm
  • Weakness of fMRI
    • Not a direct measure of neuronal activity in areas of the brain, difficult to tell what kind of activity is occurring in these brain areas
    • Overlooks networked nature of brain activity and focuses on localisation instead of communication
