REBT

Cards (7)

  • Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy
  • The central technique of REBT is to identify and dispute irrational thoughts. Ellis identified different methods of disputing: Empirical, Logical, Pragmatic
  • Empirical Disputing - Irrational beliefs are not consistent with reality and there is no evidence for them in real life
  • Logical disputing - Irrational beliefs do not follow logically from the available information / evidence. Conclusions drawn are illogical.
  • Pragmatic Disputing - Irrational beliefs have no real use to the client and have a negative effect and therefore should be dispensed
  • Successful disputing changes self-defeating, irrational beliefs into more rational beliefs and the client can move to more rational interpretations of events which have healthier consequences. This in turn helps the depressed client feel better and become more self-accepting.
  • Ellis also uses behavioural activation.
