  • Verbals
    A form of a verb that functions as an adjective, adverb, or noun in a sentence.
  • Three types of verbals:
    • Participles
    • Gerunds
    • Infinitives
  • Participle
    A verb form that functions as an adjective in a sentence.
  • Participles can be divided into two forms:
    • Present participle, always ends in -ing
    • Past Participle, ends in -ed or -en
  • Participial Phrases
    Contain a participle with any complements and modifiers. These phrases sometimes look like verbs but function as adjectives in a sentence, giving nouns further descriptions.
    Ex. She watched the musicians playing in the park
    (The participial phrase in the sentence above is "Playing in the park," which functions as an adjective modifying the noun "musicians.")
  • Gerund
    A verb in present participle form that functions as a noun in a sentence. It is easy to spot since it is always in its present participle form "verb + ing."
  • Gerund Phrases
    A gerund with complements and modifiers. These phrases may be places in different parts of a sentence as they functions as subjects, objects, or complements in a sentence.
  • Infinitive
    A verb form that is usually preceded by the word "to" and functions as a noun, adjective, or an adverb in a sentence.
  • Infinitive phrases
    Contain an infinitive with complements and modifiers. Functions as subjects, objects, or complements.
  • Key components:
    • A particle functions as an adjective
    • Participial Phrases contain a participle with complements and modifiers
    • A gerund functions as a noun
    • Gerund Phrases contains gerund with complements and modifiers
    • An infinitive functions as a noun, adjective, or adverb
    • Infinitive phrases contain infinitive with complements and modifiers
