T 1 CHEMISTRY

Cards (10)

  • CHEMISTRY is a physical science that describes matter - its complete structure, compositon, properties and changes it udergoes.
  • Matter: Anything that has mass and occupies space. :The substance of which physical objects are made.
  • Mixture: A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically bonded. : A physical blend of two or more components, each of which retains its own identity and properties.
  • Homogeneous Mixture: A mixture with a uniform composition throughout, also known as a solution. :A mixture in which the composition is consistent and the different parts are not visible.
  • Heterogeneous Mixture: A mixture where the components are not uniformly distributed and can be visibly distinguished. : A mixture in which the different substances remain physically separate and can be seen as individual components.
  • Colloids: A type of heterogeneous mixture where very small particles of one substance are evenly distributed throughout another without settling out. : A mixture in which microscopically dispersed insoluble particles are suspended throughout another substance.
  • Suspensions: A type of heterogeneous mixture where particles are large enough to eventually settle out. : A mixture in which particles are dispersed throughout the bulk of a fluid but are large enough to settle out over time.
  • Pure Substance: A material that has a constant composition and has consistent properties throughout the sample. It can be an element or a compound. : A substance made of only one type of atom or molecule.
  • Compound: A pure substance consisting of two or more different elements that are chemically combined in fixed proportions. : A substance formed when two or more chemical elements are chemically bonded together.
  • Element: A pure substance consisting of only one type of atom. : A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
