*mixing gases n mixing liquids

Cards (6)

  • Explanation

the random movement, speed and direction of gas particles means when 2 gases are in one container, both'll fill the container
  • Diffusion

the overall random movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
  • Concentration

the number of particles in a particular volume
  • How gases diffuse

    1. at first the tap is closed and the red and blue gas particles are divided, one not having any concentration inn the other
    2. the tap is then opened and the gases start to spread out/ diffuse as some particles will pass through to areas of lower concentration
    3. after some time and complete diffusion there is equal concentration of both gases on both sides which marks the end of the diffusion but not the the end of the movement
  • Diffusion in food

some food particles change into gas when heated but move/ spread out randomly through the air by diffusion
the smell gets stronger as you move closer as the concentration of the particles is higher the closer you get to the source of particles
many animals use change in strength of smell to find food
  • Mixing liquids

particles in a liquid also move at random and move from high concentration to low concentration until completely diffused throughout water
