light dependent reaction

Cards (9)

  • light wavelengths involvement in reaction?
light hits PSII molecule, energy causing 2 electrons to be excited
    • increased energy level and electrons leave PSII
  • where do electrons move after PSII?
electrons picked up by first electron carrier (electron transport chain) within chain, series of redox reactions take place.
  • what happens during redox reactions?
energy in electrons falls and energy is lost, being used in photophosphorylation (synthesis of ATP in stroma)
  • what happens in the PSI molecule?
lightwaves also excite the electrons and leave, continuing electron transport chain. electrons from PSII molecule replace those lost from the PSI molecule.
  • photolysis?
splitting of water, in thylakoid space. half an oxygen is released.
  • what happens when electrons reach the end of the transport chain?
accompanied by the co-enzyme NADP, they accept the Hydrogen ion from photolysis to create NADPH. ATP and NAPDH are then used in the light independent reaction.
  • photophosphorylation?
ADP + Pi -> ATP (energy used to create reaction)
  • what is needed in the reaction?
    water, light, carbon dioxide, temperature
  • where does light dependent reaction take place?
    thylakoid membrane
