Freud viewed the adult personality as having
three
basic components – Id, Ego and
Superego.
Id
- are the:
instinct
part of the personality and we are born with it.
It is our
unconscious
desires and
impulses.
The
ego
- is logical and rational and seeks to satisfy the Id in
socially acceptable
ways.
Super ego-is our moral thoughts. It contains two parts: the
conscience
and the
ego.
The ego ideal tells us what we should do.
The
conscience
makes us feel guilty; the
ego
ideal makes us feel proud.
Frued states there are 3 defence mechanisms humans go through,
Repression
, Denial and
Displacement
Repression
: Unconsciously blocking out
painful
memories
Denial
: Refusing to accept
reality
Displacement
: Changing a feeling towards another another
targer
Imbalance
: For a person to have a healthy
personality
there needs to be a balance between all three
If a person has more
ID
then they are uncontrollable
If a person has more
superego
they are judgemental and moralistic
There are 3
Defence Mechanisms
made by the
ego
:
Repression
Displacement
Denial
Superego
punished ego by using
guilt
and suppresses urges
