Transmission of Sound

• Sound is transmitted in short distances through most materials
• Echo - When hard surfaces reflect sound waves
• Sound travels at 1500m/s in seawater
• Calculate Depth:

  1. Halve the time it takes for the sonar signal to return.
  2. Multiply this by the speed of sound
• Echolocation - a technique used by bats, dolphins and other animals to locate objects using the reflection of sound.
• Absorption of sound - soft materials absorb sound and convert it into heat, compared to hard materials that reflect sound.
