Hepatocytes have receptors for hormones insulin, glucagon and adrenaline on their plasma membranes, so therefore respond to hormones and are involved in controlling blood plasma glucose concentrations
Insulin makes liver cells synthesise glycogen from glucose (glycogenesis); glucagon and adrenaline make liver cells breakdown glycogen to glucose (glycogenolysis)
