Cards (5)

  • To describe any lesion, use the following criteria:
    1. Location
    2. Number/extent
    3. Demarcation
    4. Distribution: Focal, multifocal, focally extensive, multifocal to coalescing, diffuse, random, segmental....
    5. Color
    6. Size (metric units)
    7. Shape
    8. Consistency and texture
    9. Any particular smells or sounds should also be recorded.
  • a morphological diagnosis is based on what is seen, so the predominant lesions in the tissues macroscopically
  • a morphological diagnosis describes severity, duration, distribution, location (organ or tissue), and the disease process (degenerative, inflammatory, neoplastic) of the lesion
    • Duration: peracute, acute, subacute, chronic
    • Severity: Mild, moderate, severe
    • Distribution: Focal, multifocal, focally extensive, multifocal to coalescing, diffuse
  • Neoplasia has a different layout for morphological diagnoses (Organ: Neoplasia) because modifiers are irrelevant (ex. There is no “mild”  lymphoma)
  • morphologic diagnosis = macroscopic diagnosis
