EVALS EEG

Cards (6)

  • EVALS for EEG
    • S - allowed us to better understand brain activity that involves random bursts of electrical activity
    • S - high temporal resolution
    • S - cheaper than fMRI
    • W - low spatial resolution
    • W - cannot detect deeper brain activity
  • S - EEG - it has allowed us to better understand brain activity that involves random bursts of electrical activity. For example, it has helped develop an understanding of epilepsy and therefore we are better able to assist its diagnosis. Furthermore, EEG has helped further understanding on sleep cycles by showing there are different brain waves in different stages of sleep
  • S - EEG - high temporal resolution. Unlike fMRI with the delay between neural activity and blood flow, EEG has no delay between electrical currents and neural activity. EGG picks up quick changes in neural activity which happen any ms. Therefore EEG can help identify exactly when neural activity occurs
  • S - EEG - cheaper than fMRI. Therefore it is more affordable to test a larger sample size. Thus increasing the generalisability of findings of studies where EEG is used. Moreover, this makes EEG a more accessible method for researchers
  • W - EEG - low spatial resolution. This is bc EEG measures the combined activity of many neurons in different parts of the brain underneath electrodes. Since EEG signal is not useful for pinpointing the exact source of neural activity, we need methods like fMRI to do this
  • W - EEG - cannot detect deeper brain activity. It can only detect activity on the surface of electrodes. Activity in deeper regions like the amygdala. Therefore it creates an incomplete picture of the brain's functions and activity
