• How it works

  An area along the coast is where the sea is purposely allowed to flood the land
• Advantages

  • Creates Saltmarsh habitats which increases coastal biodiversity
  • The marshes can store large volumes of water acting as a buffer from erosion
  • Cattle can graze the land providing an economic opportunity for farmers
  • Can be used for recreation
• Disadvantages

  • Landowners need to be compensated- this can post between 5,000- 10,000 pounds per hectare
  • The land cannot be used for agriculture or recreation all year round
