  • In Italian, two pronouns can combine to create pronomi doppi (double pronouns).
  • Indirect object pronouns
    with direct object pronouns (lo, la, li, le) or the pronoun ne. When they are combined, indirect object pronouns precede the others.
    Mi, ti, ci, and vi change to me, te, ce, and ve.
    The indirect object pronouns Le, gli, and le change to glie- and attach to the direct object pronouns (lo, la, li, le) or ne creating one word.

  • As with single pronouns, all pronomi doppi usually precede a conjugated verb or may be attached to the infinitive.

  • Reflexive pronouns (mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si) can also be used in combination with the direct object pronouns lo, la, li, le, or the pronoun ne. When they are combined, reflexive pronouns always precede the others and change their forms to me, te, se, ce, ve, se.

  • In Capitolo 7 we saw the combination of the adverb ci (there) and the pronoun ne. The adverb ci can also be used with the direct object pronouns lo/la/li/le. In these cases, ci precedes the others and changes to ce.

  • As we learned in Capitolo 5 and Capitolo 7, if a direct object pronoun or ne precedes a verb in the passato prossimo, the past participle must agree in gender and number with the pronoun. The same rule applies to double pronouns.
