GREAT STINK

• • Severe overcrowding caused bad living conditions, sewage and waste would flow into streets and in rivers
  • 19th century river Thames was a soup of sewage and filthy water
• • In hot summer of 1858, stench of river was so bad parliament had to meet somewhere else, people thought the smell itself could kill you
  • People thought the stink could cause miasma and spread disease and cause illness
• • The sewage and filthy water could cause disease, however little was it wasnt understood due to not knowing the cause of disease
