  • Winner - Nasser: Hero of Arab world, military defeat turned to political victory; Egyptian independence secured through Suez Canal control, lost territory to Israel in Sinai was improved when US persuaded Israel to withdraw 1957
  • Winner - Israel: Victory over Egyptian Gaza forces and Sinai proved IDF was strongest Middle East force, UN troops guarded Egyptian-Israeli border, Gaza and Israeli shipping passage through Straits of Tiran
  • Winner - USSR: Arabs are more willing to seek Soviet aid, USSR began to supply Egyptian weapons and fund projects (e.g. Aswan Dam), but, Nasser was not a Communist and remained neutral in Cold War
  • Loser - Britain and France: Eden forced to resign as British prime minister, massively miscalculated; Egypt couldn’t manage Canal alone and there would be uprising against Nasser, end of European domination of Arab world
  • Loser - West: Suez Crisis made more states anti-Western and convinced them Israel was an outpost for British imperialism
