PL BILAYER

• P - Phospholipids, refers to the hydrophilic phosphate head and the two hydrophobic fatty acid tails
• L - Lipid bilayer, phospholipids arrange themselves in a double layer or a bilayer, forming the basic structure of the cell membrane
• B - Barrier, the bilayer acts as a barrier to separate the inside of the cell from the external environment and controls what goes in/out of the cell
• I - Integral proteins, embedded inside the bilayer, help transport molecules across the membrane and perform other functions
• L - Lateral movement, phospholipids in the membrane can move laterally for flexibility and self-healing
• A - Asymmetrical, the arrangement of phospholipids in the membrane is asymmetrical, with hydrophilic heads facing in and outwards, and hydrophobic tails sandwiched in between
