practical application

  • One of the most effective treatments for SAD is phototherapy
  • •This involves a lightbox that simulates very strong light in the morning and evening. It is thought to reset melatonin levels in people with SAD.
  • Phototherapy relieves symptoms in up to 60% of sufferers (Eastman et al, 1998).
  •  However Eastman et al’s study also recorded a placebo effect of 30% using a ‘sham negative-ion generator’ (participants were told it was another form of treatment).
  • •This casts doubt on the chemical influence of phototherapy.
  • A placebo isn’t an active treatment, it shouldn’t have a significant effect on the condition.
  • Researchers can compare the results from the placebo to those from the actual drug. This helps them to determine if the new drug is effective.
  • It’s believed to occur due to psychological factors like expectations or classical conditioning
  • Most people can use light therapy safely. The recommended light boxes have filters that remove harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, so there's no risk of skin or eye damage for most people.
