• psychic determinism views behaviour as determined by psychological processes
• the psychodynamic approach, for psychic determinism, regards all thoughts and behaviour as originating from the unconscious mind
• unconscious factors such as life and death instincts, childhood experiences and disturbing memories can all influence behaviour
• for FREUD there are no accidents, no matter how apparently random or irrational the behaviour may appear to be, unconscious causes always account for them
• people believe they're free, but in FREUD's view, this is an illusion
