    (1) Drinks due to guilt - violently assaulted Eva - resulting in her pregnancy -> his drunkenness helped lead to her suicide.
    (2) Represents younger generation - More socially aware than the older gen
    (3) Audience respects his character for accepting his responsibility in the role of Eva's death.
  • ERIC'S BELIEFS:
    -Eric is not naïve and is willing to briefly challenge his fathers' views.
    -Eric shows empathy for factory workers;
    "Why shouldn't they try for higher wages?... You said yourself she was a good worker. I'd let her stay."
    • Views them as actual people.
    -By end of play > feels disgusted about his parent's reactions and lack of care towards Eva.
    "I don't give a damn if I stay here or not!"
  • ROLE:
    -Eric represents the reckless and spoilt upper middle class men > thinks they can afford to be selfish, indulgent, frivolous and lacks sense of direction.
    -His voice is ignored, [much like those of the working class], his views are criticized by both of his parents.
    !> CONTRASTS the respect given by Birling's to Gerald.
    -Audience feels sympathy for Eric as he redeemed himself and learnt his lesson.
    !> Doesn't care if his actions are exposed - takes his responsibility and is a symbol of HOPE & CHANGE
