Setting up of the UN

  • In 1941, Roosevelt and Churchill met and agreed the foundations of the UN. Decided that the League of Nations ultimately as a failure, and something more effective was needed to replace it.
  • 1943: Moscow declaration by USA, USSR, China and GB recognised the need for an international body to replace the L of N.
  • 50 Nations signed its charter with more in the years after war.
    Powers defeated in war did not join until later, e.g.
    • Italy (1955)
    • Japan (1956)
    • West and East Germany (1973)
  • In 1945, the united nations organisation was founded in San Francisco.
