  • Nikolai Yezkov was head of the NKVD between the years 1936 and 1938.
    He was a loyal Stalinist.
    He oversaw a dramatic increase in the number of victims of the purges, by arresting members of the communist party, army and general population.
  • Nobody was safe from the purges.
    This period of time was known in the Soviet Union as 'Yezhovschina' (Time of Yezkov).
