• Deviance Amplification Spiral: a process where the attempt to control deviance leads to an increase in the level of deviance. Leading to greater attempts to control it and in turn higher levels of deviance
•  Cohen 1972 Folk Devils and Moral Panics study of ‘mods and rockers’ where press involvement and moral panic caused a crackdown causing the police to arrest more youths in turn causing the confirmation of truth involving the groups. 
• Lemert 1967: these theories ‘rest heavily on the idea that deviance leads to social control. I have come to believe the reverse idea, social control leads to deviance’.
