  • What was the Northern Rebellion?
    A rebellion against Queen Elizabeth I in 1569 by the earls Norfolk, Northumberland, and Westmoreland in Northern England. They raised an army of 4600 men and held an illegal mass at Durham Cathedral. Sussex raised a royal army which caused the rebels to flee. Norfolk was imprisoned, Northumberland executed and Westmoreland escaped to France.
  • What was the Ridolfi Plot?
    in 1571, Roberto Ridolfi, an Italian banker, created a conspiracy to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I of England and replace her with Mary, Queen of Scots. He sent letters to Mary and went to England to gain support. Many supporters of the plot were put on trial and executed (Such as Norfolk). The plot ultimately failed and proved that Catholics were a significant issue.
  • What was the Throckmorton Plot?
    In 1583 the Throckmorton Plot was a Catholic conspiracy to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I of England. Francis Throckmorton used coded letters to plan his plot. He planned to have the French invade after Elizabeth was killed. This was significant as foreign powers were now involved. Throckmorton was arrested and executed which upset Philip II.
  • What was the Babington Plot?
    In 1586 Anthony Babington worked in Bolton Castle where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned. He fell in love with her- despite being married. And sent coded letters to kill Elizabeth with her. Francis Walsingham decrypted these letters and was able to prove Mary's involvement. Mary was finally executed on the 27th of February 1587 in Fotheringay Castle.

    Essex was very mad that Elizabeth promoted Robert Cecil and he made peace in Ireland against Elizabeth's wishes. So she banned him from court and he was financially ruined.
