  • The religious settlement in 1559 was two parts, The Act of Uniformity meant that everyone had to attend a protestant service on Sundays and that everyone must have a prayer book in English. The Act of Supremacy meant that Elizabeth was the supreme governor of the church. This upset Catholics and puritans despite Elizabeth trying to strike a balance.
  • The changes that came into place due to the religious settlement were mostly in favor of protestants. Priests were now able to marry, all services were in English, and Catholics may only worship in private but archbishops were allowed to remain.

In 1583 recusant fines became £20 which today would be £5000. In 1585 catholic priests were killed and having one in your home was illegal. In 1593 travelling 5 miles from your home as a catholic also became illegal.
