• it is a type of bar chart in which biomass at each trophic level is represented by a horizontal bar
• the amount of biomass decreases are you move up the pyramid from the producer
• the decrease in biomass is because of decrease in energy moving up the trophic levels
• unlike pyramids of numbers, pyramids of biomass always have the same shape
