• Explains GD as resulting from an unresolved Oedipus complex. the focus is only on boys and their inability to seperate from their mothers and fully identify with their father
• Ovey and Person suggested that GD in males is caused by the child experiencing extreme separation anxiety before gender identity is established.

  The child fantasies of fusion with his mother to relieve the anxiety and the danger of separation is removed

  Consequence is the child becomes the mother and adopts female identity
